You may have forgotten…

…to stop smoking. Giving up smoking isn’t just good for your health, it’s also good for your memory, according to research from Northumbria University.  You now you can remember to forget about cigarettes and how great would that be?  Like the clients I see in my Cornwall practice I can imagine you thinking ‘I can be free to leave the house without having to think about whether I have my cigarettes’ or ‘I no longer have to worry about what smoking is doing to my future health’.

Of course the health benefits of quitting smoking is well known, however many clients comment on the wider benefits when they stop smoking from having more money to smelling nicer, however and now you can look forward to an improved memory!

Some tips if you are wanting to stop smoking:
  1. Take deep breaths.  A lot of people associate smoking with relaxing however pumping toxic chemicals in to our system has the opposite effect on our body.  You can feel more relaxed by taking in some deep breaths.
  2. Suck sugar free mints.  Did you know cigarettes are coated in sugar?  This is possibly what a lot of people put on weight when they stop, the have sugar cravings.  You can beat these by sucking sugar free mints when you quit smoking as it will trick your brain as to thinking it is having sugar.
  3. Focus on your breathing if you get a craving for a cigarette.  A craving only lasts a few seconds, it becomes intolerable when your mind follows the feeling with the thoughts of having a cigarette.  Focus on your breath and you might find the craving passes quicker than you imagine.
  4. Change your habits.  If you smoke with your right hand, from now on put them in your left hand when you go to light up and smoke.  You are in an unconscious trance when you smoke, on autopilot.  This can help interrupt the trance and let you take control and decide whether you really want that cigarette or not.

The good news is that it is never too late to stop smoking.  You can get the health benefits more quickly than you think.  And who couldn’t do with some extra cash and an improved memory!!
