I love the quote ‘stand up for what you believe for even if it means standing alone’. I don’t know who originally said this however I do agree with it. However the problem is it can be hard work when it feels like you are swimming against the tide. Your own confidence, limiting beliefs and thoughts can hold you back but so can the fear of standing out from the crowd.
New research shows that following the crowd may actually be hard wired in our brains at the expense of your own opinions. Probably a learnt behaviour over generations as part of our need to be accepted by our tribe. Get cut off from the tribe and your chances of survival are minimal.
The good news is that this can be re-wired. You can build your self belief and confidence to be able to stand up for what you believe in, whether that is yourself or an external cause. I am seeing more clients recently who find it hard to say no to others, even though they want to. They are left with no energy or time for their own needs, wishes and desires. The good news is once we have dealt with their lack of self confidence they find they can regain a more healthy balance in life.
So, it may feel like hard work but it is possible however sometimes with a little help.
