I have been really struck by comedian Eddie Izzard’s feat of 43 marathons in 51 days for Comic Relief. He only did about 3 weeks preparation and his marathon time started at over 10 hours and reduced to just over 5. Quite an amazing mental feat as well as physical (he lost some toe-nails as well as having blisters on blisters…). I think it goes to show what we can do with mind-over-matter. I recently experienced this in a 10k run (a stroll in the park compared to Eddie’s feat), when I got running with a stranger and realised the pace we were going was faster than I had planned – I was going to run out of steam. Using mind-over-matter and getting my own head out of the way (‘I am not going to make it’) I finished with my personal best, when I was using the event to get back in to fitness rather than getting near my previous times (when I was a lot younger and fitter!!). If you want to learn how you can get out of your own way, whether for sports or any other performance, contact me and we can see how I can help you.
