I wonder if you have heard of the phrase ‘what we resist persists’? It is natural to fight against perceptions of limiting beliefs we may have of ourselves (e.g. I’m not good enough, I am going to get in to trouble if I get it wrong…). But the thing is, when we fight it, it resists and get stronger. Imagine putting your hand on someone’s chest and then start pushing them, they are naturally going to resist and start putting pressure back. It is a natural defence mechanism. The same goes with our feelings and beliefs. If we resist them, they get stronger because, believe it or not, they have a positive intent (in my experience with clients it is can be to protect you, keep your feet on the ground or something similar). So, the first step is to accept it, even thank it for what it is trying to do. The more you do this, the less you become aware of it as it dissipates leaving you free and equipped to move forward in being the person you truly are. You mat want to try this quick exercise:
Say to yourself ‘I am accepting myself as I am’. Breathe and be aware of what is happening inside. What feelings, thoughts or sensations come to mind. Whatever it is, say ‘thank you’ to it. If you want, you could ask what it wants, what is it’s positive intent? Then thank it.
If you become aware of a feeling, thought of belief that you think is holding you back from doing what you want or being the person you want to be, thank it, for it has a positive intent.
