My job as a sports performance, business and life coach here in Cornwall (and further afield with clients on the phone/Skype) is to help people move from a place they often feel ‘stuck’ to a place where they can move forward and achieve their ambitions.
A coach can often see our own blind-spots that we can’t (hence being blind spots!) which is why I have my own coach. One things I share with my clients is how we can learn from our body, and given our body is a bunch of cells, we can learn from the life of a cell as well. Let me explain.
A cell is in one of two states. Growth or protection. Growth is about moving forward and creating the life you want. Protection is about fear and being stuck where you are unable to progress.
Which are you in?
Here are 10 tips to coach yourself in to a growth mindset:
- Know what you want. Some many people find it easy to describe what they don’t want but what about what you do want?
- Feel the fear and do it anyway. Protection is more comfortable, it keeps you away from fear. Growth can feel uncomfortable at times, like learning something new.
- Set unrealistic goals. Realistic goals don’t allow you to achieve beyond what you think you can achieve. You achieve far more than you possibly think!
- Utilise your intrinsic motivation.
- Trust your inner wisdom not your thinking. Listen to your gut and heart more than your head.
- Surround yourself by inspiring encouraging people. You become who you hang around with.
- Visualise what you want – give your brain the target to focus on. It always has a target even if it is one you are not aware of (and in which case probably one you don’t want) so ensure it is the right one!
- Be aware of your limiting beliefs. What stories do you tell yourself? How do you know they are true?
- Take action. You learn far more by doing an imperfect job and adjusting/refining than waiting until you think you are ready to do a perfect job. You will just keep waiting. Take action.
- Remember a journey starts with a single step. What step are you going to take today? Just a single step, it doesn’t have to be a giant leap. Even a leap starts with a run up!
Enjoy!
