We often tell stories to ourselves even without us knowing it. These can have a wide and deep impact on our emotions and behaviour. Just the other day I was trying to get our son dressed so we could get out of the door (as many 3 years old boys he could quite happily not get dressed all day!). My father-in-law mentioned the date and how the month was running way and I had a sudden bolt of panic about not completing a project in time. I was telling myself all sorts of stories about how it was going to be a disaster….of course loosing any sense of perspective. The Japan earthquake/tsunami is a disaster, my situation is very much not. But my thoughts created a whole new reality which I believed. What happened then was I lost my temper with my son. Not for what he was doing or not doing, purely because my mind had taken my down my own little reality tunnel and all the emotions and thoughts got out of control resulting in me responding to him in an unkind and unloving way.
Thankfully I quickly realised what had happened and could let the thoughts go, settling my mind and finding peace in the moment. I was then able to ask my son to forgive me and re-establish the loving relationship I want for us. It was a reminder to me of the power of our thoughts and knowing how they deceive us, however true it seems in the moment. We create our own reality, time travelling to the future based on passed experiences….and soon our thoughts are telling us they are the result of this ‘reality’ not the creator of it.
I was telling myself we were going to be broke and homeless because it was the middle of the month….what stories do you tell yourself? Play with letting it go and you may find that inner peace & wisdom that is always there inside us. As George Pransky puts it, it is the soft flute of our innate wisdom and this often drowned out by the brass band of our thoughts.
Enjoy re-connecting with your soft flute.
