I have helped a number of people stop smoking in my London and Cornwall practice. A study shows that quitting smoking may not be a matter of conscious control. This may sound like the bleedin’ obvious but it also shows that “only five percent of unaided quit attempts result in successful abstinence”. A lot of smokers turn to nicotine patches or even electronic cigarettes but you will be surprised at the increase of people coming to see me to kick the habit of patches and electronic cigarettes. They do not deal with the underlying reasons of why people smoke and remove the urge to need nicotine or a cigarette – they just replace one behaviour with another.
Another study shows that smokers who feel stressed or anxious find it even more difficult to give up. Again this may sound obvious as many people think smoking is relaxing. The things is, pumping your body with toxic chemicals is not relaxing to the body! It is the opposite. The body has to be active to deal with the poisons, however the smoker associates having a cigarette with relaxing. They probably smoke when taking a break at work, or at the end of one task before starting the next. The relaxation is a trick of the mind, you would be more relaxed by taking a few deep breaths of fresh air!
I believe these two articles give an indication as to why hypnosis has been scientifically demonstrated to be the most affective way of giving up smoking.
