The Three Principles.
Understanding the human operating system. The foundation of my work with clients is built upon three principles of the mind that once understood bring a deep sense of clarity and psychological well-being. It enables us to get out of our own way and have more time in a state of ‘flow’ in life, or the ‘zone’ when performing.
Articulated by the late Sydney Banks, The Three Principles are an understanding of the mind that point towards an entirely different paradigm of human experience and evolution.
This understanding provides the three principles of the mind behind our experience of life.
There are three fundamental misunderstandings of how life works that keep us stuck in our unhelpful thoughts and feelings, that keep over-thinking and worrying and prevent us from having peace, clarity and achieving the things we want.
The three principles of the mind help us let go of these misunderstandings and see more clearly what is behind our human experience and re-connect to our true sense of self with greater wellbeing, confidence and clarity.
Let’s explore these three misunderstandings.
THE NATURE OF THOUGHT
Most people are trying to manage their thinking in some way. Although they would like to think less or have more positive thinking they believe their thinking is useful as a guidance mechanism to life, to help them make decisions, to be safe, to be wise.
However, when I ask clients what they are consciously thinking on the days they feel in a state of ‘flow’, when they feel ‘on fire’ performing at their best with greater ease and well-being they begin to realise they not actually thinking anything. This is because flow is a non-thinking state is a state of being not thinking.
It’s a misunderstanding of the nature of thought that means we keep chasing our tail of thinking trying to think our way to clarity and peace of mind, when it is thinking preventing us from having it.
THE PRINCIPLE OF THOUGHT
Thoughts come and thoughts go spontaneously and this ability to create thoughts comes from the Principle of Thought. It is the interface between the the formless energy behind life and our human experience.
We have the ability to create thoughts of all shapes and sizes. positive, negative. However they are not reality. No thoughts are more real or important as any others.
When we realise we cannot stop thinking, it’s whether we think it matters or not we automatically let go of them and find peace of mind.
WHERE OUR FEELINGS COME FROM
THE PRINCIPLE OF CONSCIOUSNESS
The capacity experience life, to turn a thought in to an experience.
Like looking at painting, or listening to music it can evoke an emotional response within us. The painting or music didn’t do that. It was our thinking about it coming alive in our consciousness.
We think we are feeling our life circumstances but this is not true. We live in the perception of reality. Our perception of reality is our thinking.
Some people say they are in a stressful job but the job doesn’t have the power to make them feel anything. It is what they’re thinking about the job creates their experience.
This is why some days feel better than others, think comes and goes. It genuinely looks and feels like we are feeling our circumstances but that is not how the mind works.
WHERE OUR wellbeing COMEs FROM
We often think our sense of psychological well-being comes form certain criteria or conditions in this physical world. For example,‘I’ll be OK when…’ or ‘I’ll be OK if…’ is a common subconscious thought process. We are constantly trying to control circumstances or the future to ensure we get what we think we need to be happy, to be OK.
The truth is our sense of ‘OKness’ comes from within us, its is not dependant on anything external. Look at little children, they are so in the moment with a feeling of OKness more often than not. When they are not they drop back in to that state more quickly than you can imagine. They don’t worry about the future or hang on to the past.
We came in to the world with this innate well-being.
THE PRINCIPLE OF MIND
There is an energy and intelligence behind life that we will never truly understand with our human minds. It enables a cut to heal itself without us doing anything and a shoal of fish to swim together and know what to do. It is whatever God/Life/Universe/The Divine is for you. We are made of this energy. We are part of it. It doesn’t make anything defective or that needs to prove itself in any way.
We are OK just as we are, whatever happens in the future.
“The Universal Mind, or the impersonal mind, is constant and unchangeable. The personal mind is in a perpetual state of change. All humans have the inner ability to synchronise their personal mind with their impersonal mind to bring harmony into their lives.”
“Consciousness is the gift of awareness. Consciousness allows the recognition of form, form being the expression of Thought… Mental health lies within the consciousness of all human beings, but it is shrouded and held prisoner by our own erroneous thoughts. This is why we must look past our contaminated thoughts to find the purity and wisdom that lies inside our own consciousness.”
“Thought is the creative agent we use to direct us through life. Thought is the master key that opens the world of reality to all living creatures. Thought is not reality; yet it is through Thought that our realities are created.”
